Edition ISBN: 9780716771418, (not earlier editions). The textbook is available
in the CCSF Library, On Reserve, 2-hour library use.

Course
Objectives
(CCSF Course Outline)
Upon successful completion of this course, the student
will be able to:
A. Describe the historical antecedents of psychology.
B. Identify psychology as a science and the profession
that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems.
C. Compare and contrast the major contemporary
theoretical perspectives in psychology
D. Describe, contrast and evaluate the basic research
methods of psychology
E. Evaluate psychological research and theory as
presented both in the popular media and professional journals.
F. Summarize, discuss and evaluate current and past
research and theory in the following major content areas: physiological
correlates of behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, cognition,
consciousness, motivation, emotion, psychological disorders and treatments for
psychological disorders.
G. Apply the theories and research findings discussed
in class to increase understanding of self and others.
Grading
1) 60% Quizzes, multiple
choice/short answer. There will be 5 quizzes. The best 3 scores will be
counted. No make-up testing. Note: Quiz #4
and #5 are optional if you have already completed 3 quizzes and are satisfied
with your scores.
2) 20%: Final Multiple-Choice
Exam, comprehensive (all previously tested topics)
3) 10% Term Paper
4) 5%: Participation
5) 5% Attendance and Late. Earned if
total penalty score is 3 pts. or less.
Absence=1pt, Late (after roll call, before 50% of class time)=1/2
pt.
6) Extra Credit Options, up to 10%. Note: only limited
extra credit (3%) is applicable towards an “A” grade. An “A”
represents excellent knowledge of course material as measured by standard
academic skills, e.g. comprehension and memorization of reading & lecture
material, test-taking skills, writing papers.
Testing Aid
For each quiz and the Final Exam you are allowed to
bring a one card of notes.
--maximum size is 3x5
inches (standard, not large, index card), both sides
--your original handwritten notes (i.e. not shared,
not word processed, not photocopied)
--card will be turned in with test and will not be
returned. (If you want to keep info, make a photocopy prior to test.)
